# Persistent memory for Cline with Slowave

> Give Cline a local memory that carries across coding sessions. Slowave configures the CLI and VS Code extension and adds its rules for you.

Slowave lets Cline carry decisions, constraints and reusable methods across coding sessions.

## What you get

* Setup adds the Slowave server to Cline's MCP settings file.
* Setup adds Slowave's instructions to `~/.cline/rules/slowave.md`.
* Setup covers both the Cline CLI and the VS Code extension when it finds them.
* No manual paste is needed.

## Set up

**1. Install Slowave**

```bash theme={null}
pipx install slowave
```

**2. Preview the changes**

```bash theme={null}
slowave setup --client cline --dry-run
```

The preview shows the exact settings path for your Cline surface.

**3. Run setup**

```bash theme={null}
slowave setup --client cline
```

**4. Restart or reload Cline**

In VS Code, reload the window.

## Check that it works

Start a coding task in Cline. The `slowave_*` tools should appear. Then run:

```bash theme={null}
slowave doctor
```

## Good to know

* Cline's CLI and VS Code extension keep MCP settings in different places. Setup detects and configures the paths it finds.
* The CLI path is `~/.cline/data/settings/cline_mcp_settings.json`. The VS Code path sits under the extension's `globalStorage` folder.
* Setup detects Cline when `~/.cline/` exists or the VS Code extension folder is present.
* Slowave runs on macOS, Linux and Windows.
* Recalled context is sent to your model provider through Cline.

## Troubleshooting

> [accordion] The tools don't appear
>
> Check the settings path shown by `slowave setup --dry-run`. Restart or reload Cline, then run `slowave doctor`.

> [accordion] Doctor says configured, but there are no tools
>
> The old `~/.cline/mcp.json` file isn't read by current Cline. Use the settings path from the dry run instead.

> [accordion] The tools appear but memory isn't used
>
> Check that `~/.cline/rules/slowave.md` exists and has the Slowave block. If not, run `slowave setup --client cline` again.
