# Persistent memory for Cursor with Slowave

> Give Cursor a local memory that carries across sessions. Slowave connects over MCP; you paste one block into Rules for AI.

Slowave lets Cursor reuse project decisions and constraints across sessions. Setup needs one manual paste.

## What you get

* Setup adds the Slowave server to `~/.cursor/mcp.json`. Cursor then shows the memory tools.
* You paste Slowave's instructions into Cursor yourself. They tell the agent when to use those tools.
* Memory stays on your machine.

## Set up

**1. Install Slowave**

```bash theme={null}
pipx install slowave
```

**2. Preview and run setup**

```bash theme={null}
slowave setup --dry-run
slowave setup --client cursor
```

Setup prints Slowave's instruction block in your terminal.

**3. Paste the instructions**

In Cursor, open **Settings** then **Rules for AI**. Paste the block that setup printed.

You can also add the block to a `.cursorrules` file in your project.

**4. Restart Cursor**

Restart or reload Cursor.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Cursor shows the tools but doesn't tell the agent when to call them. The pasted rules do that.

## Check that it works

Start a conversation with a model that supports tool use. The `slowave_*` tools should appear. Run this in a terminal:

```bash theme={null}
slowave doctor
```

## Good to know

* Setup detects Cursor when `~/.cursor/` exists.
* Slowave runs on macOS, Linux and Windows.
* Use a model that supports tool use.
* Recalled context goes to your model provider through Cursor.

## Troubleshooting

> [accordion] The tools don't appear
>
> Run `slowave status --services` and restart Cursor.

> [accordion] The tools appear but memory isn't used
>
> The rules paste is probably missing. Add the Slowave block to **Rules for AI** or `.cursorrules`.

> [accordion] I lost the instruction block
>
> Run `slowave setup --client cursor` again. Setup prints the current block.
